    VPN/Proxy Filtering

    Hello everyone!

Over the past week or so I have been developing software for all of our servers (including the TeamSpeak) with the goal of automatically filtering out a large majority of VPN/proxy connections. I would like to thank Grant and Marx for supporting this project. For those of you who use VPNs responsibly, please understand that this is not directed at you. Unfortunately, some of our players have been using these types of connections to bypass their bans and we simply can't allow this to continue. All of our staff members are welcome to use a VPN and I have taken precautions to ensure that they will not be punished for doing so. However, when a normal player connects to one of our servers, their IP address will be checked automatically to determine if they might be using a VPN. All IP addresses are innocent until proven guilty and the "bad" ones will be globally banned. Please note that only IP addresses will be banned, not Minecraft accounts. If you get banned for using a VPN, you should be able to turn it off and join the server normally (assuming you weren't already banned). If one of our players is banned and claims that they were not using a VPN, we will look into the situation and make sure they get whitelisted if they are found to be telling the truth. You won't get in trouble for using a VPN, but normal players will not be allowed to use them for the time being. That being said, if you are found to be using one, we'll just block it and your Minecraft account shouldn't be banned. If you don't use any of these types of connections, you have nothing to worry about. We've been testing everything out quite a bit and we haven't had a single case where someone was banned and wasn't actually using a VPN. There were a couple minor problems in the beginning, but all of that has been sorted out. If you stuck around long enough to read this ugly thing, I'd like to thank you for reading! Let me (or any other Engineer) know if you have any suggestions or concerns. We'll do our best to address any problems that come up.

    User Feedback

Hey everyone, I just thought I'd make a comment and hopefully clear things up a bit. I spoke with Brian and Hunter on TeamSpeak about all of this after my original post was made regarding the use of VPNs and proxies. My intention is not to scare people into thinking that the use of VPN/proxy connections is against the rules. Your Minecraft account will not be banned if you are found to be using a VPN. That being said, if you get banned because you forgot to turn off your VPN, you should be able to turn it off and connect normally. The only exception to this is with TeamSpeak, since you'd have to generate a new identity as well (this is meant to slow down bypass attempts, but it may be changed in the future). The people who were already banned for using a VPN were either manually banned by staff members because they were bypassing their bans (not because they were using a VPN), or they were banned by the new system for the same reason (though there have only been a few bans). The most recent ban, which is the one I believe Hunter is referring to was for Major Tom, who was automatically banned and later proven to be using multiple VPNs (possibly unintentionally). Major Tom's VPN was globally IP banned during the testing phase of the project. This was not intentional, but it does prove that the system works with a pretty good degree of accuracy. This was not public knowledge, but for the last week this system has been running on all of our servers and for the most part, nobody noticed that anything had changed. That's exactly how I intended it to work out. I wanted to make sure that the average player was not affected and I do believe we have achieved that goal. If anyone has questions and would like to calmly discuss them on TeamSpeak, I'd be happy to do so.
